In 2009, ASCD initiated a new program for the networks and renamed themProfessional Interest Communities. Along with this initiative, MLRN created a Student Advisory Board to solicit the input of graduate students who are currently in the process of becoming a teacher in their respective states. In order to better serve new teacher candidates, it was decided to develop a forum for these persons to meet and provide them the opportunity to share their ideas and experiences as they proceed through their teacher training process.
The 5 MLRN Student Advisory Board Purposes are:
To increase the knowledge base and general awareness of best practices in the mentoring and induction of new teachers by providing a variety of forums for those who are currently in graduate school education programs to share their experiences with others.
To promote and provide effective training for student teachers.
To establish a communications forum for new teacher candidates.
To establish the norms of collegiality, collaboration and continuous professional development of graduate students as they student teach in various school settings.
To post articles on the MLRN website that are of interest to other student teachers and new to the profession as well.
Current members of the student advisory board include Krista A. Demma, Zara Dittman, Trevor Fritz, William Heisler, Edward Lake, Tim S. Lively, Megan Prange, Brian Roach, Meghan Riley, Patrick Riley, and Ryan Scharfer.
